CKD, SKD and complete-vehicle supply describe different levels of disassembly and local assembly. None of the three is automatically the best choice. The correct model depends on import policy, shipping cost, local labor, quality-control capability and order volume.

What Is a Complete Vehicle?

A complete vehicle is assembled and tested by the manufacturer before shipment. It normally reduces local assembly work and makes responsibility for final assembly clearer. The tradeoff can be higher shipping volume and, in some markets, a different duty or registration treatment.

What Is SKD?

SKD means semi-knocked down. Major modules are supplied separately and assembled at the destination. The exact disassembly level must be written into the packing and assembly plan because suppliers and markets may use the term differently.

SKD can provide a practical middle ground for importers with basic assembly capability. It may improve container utilization without requiring the full production system associated with deeper CKD assembly.

What Is CKD?

CKD means completely knocked down. The vehicle is supplied as a larger set of parts and subassemblies for local assembly. CKD can support local industrial programs and more efficient packing, but it transfers more process control to the importer or local factory.

Successful CKD operation requires trained workers, fixtures and tools, assembly instructions, torque standards, electrical testing, parts control and final inspection. Saving shipping space is not useful if rework and inconsistent assembly create higher total costs.

Five Factors to Compare

1. Local Policy and Duty Treatment

Ask a qualified local customs or compliance professional how each supply format is classified. Do not select CKD or SKD only on a supplier’s general statement because tariff and local-content rules vary.

2. Assembly Capability

Evaluate facility space, workers, tools, electrical safety, test equipment and supervision. If the local operation cannot reproduce the manufacturer’s assembly and inspection process, a more complete supply format may be safer.

3. Order Volume

Small trial orders may not justify tooling, training and detailed CKD packaging. Larger repeat programs can make local assembly investment more practical.

4. Quality Responsibility

Define who is responsible for assembly defects, damaged parts, missing components and final road testing. A clear inspection record at both origin and destination prevents disputes.

5. Parts Identification and Packaging

CKD and SKD orders need numbered packages, parts lists, assembly sequence, protection against transport damage and a process for reporting shortages.

1. Define the Transport Task First

Describe what the vehicle will carry, the expected load, the daily route, the number of working hours and the road surface. A vehicle used for farm goods on unpaved roads may need a different configuration from one used for parcel delivery on paved streets.

Useful information includes the required cargo-box length, typical payload, maximum route gradient, road width, weather exposure and whether a canopy, enclosed box or dumping function is needed.

2. Compare the Complete Power System

Do not evaluate motor power, controller, battery and axle as isolated numbers. They work as one system. The correct combination depends on payload, target speed, road gradient and duty cycle. An oversized component can increase cost without solving the real operating constraint, while an undersized system may reduce service life.

Ask the supplier to identify the proposed motor, controller, battery type, voltage, charging arrangement and compatible rear axle for the selected configuration.

3. Choose Complete Vehicle, SKD or CKD Supply

Complete vehicles are normally easier for buyers without local assembly capability. SKD supply may reduce shipping volume while keeping assembly work manageable. CKD can support deeper local assembly, but it requires trained workers, tools, quality-control procedures and a clear parts-identification system.

The right supply format depends on import duties, local rules, factory capability, order volume and the buyer’s ability to maintain consistent assembly quality.

4. Confirm Destination-Market Requirements

Vehicle registration, road-use rules, lighting, braking, identification and documentation requirements differ between markets. Provide the target country before the quotation is finalized. Never assume that a document used in one market automatically satisfies another.

Ask which documents apply to the exact model and configuration. Any certification, test report, WMI or VIN support should be verified against the vehicle being ordered and the destination authority’s current requirements.

5. Verify the Manufacturer and the Sample

Request factory information, production images, a video inspection or an independent audit where appropriate. For a new model or new supplier relationship, a sample or small trial order can help verify assembly, packaging, charging, controls and basic road performance before a larger order.

Record every approved detail in the specification sheet. Photographs and chat messages are useful references, but they should not replace the final contract specification.

6. Plan Inspection, Packaging and Spare Parts

Agree on inspection points before production. These may cover appearance, dimensions, electrical function, brakes, lights, charging, fasteners, accessories and packaging. Define what evidence will be provided and whether a third-party inspection is required.

For fleet and dealer programs, prepare an initial spare-parts list based on expected service items. Confirm manuals, wiring information, packaging labels and after-sales communication before shipment.
